Doga Topcicek: "It all happened in 24 hours, during Nomos EVE in Istanbul"
1. What inspired you to come to America to play volleyball? Why in the US?
I played volleyball for almost 11 years. I knew that I wanted to play after highschool. I was trying to find a way to have a good education and play volleyball but it wasn't possible in Turkey. That's when I understood that I needed to come to the United States.
2. What were some of your concerns and expectations about college sports in the US? What criteria determined the choice of university?
Everyone has different expectations and it's important to find your best fit. I wanted both a good education and volleyball program. Besides that, my head coach provided confidence to both me and my parents. They wouldn't feel worried about me because I have her in here. I think having a head coach who gets you and feels comfortable to be around is big criteria.
3. When did you start the university searching process? Are you happy with your choice? Do you have stories you can share with us that marked you from this experience, something you will remember for the rest of your life?
I started my university searching process at the end of my junior year of high school. My offer, commitment, and meeting with my coach all happened in 24 hours (during Nomos EVE in Istanbul, February 2020). All I can say is you feel it when you find your best fit.
4. What advice would you give to athletes who are thinking of following a path similar to yours? What do you have to say to parents and athletes who are considering starting this journey?
It's a long stressful process. All you can do is keep your grades up, get ready for the tests required by Universities and play your game. I know that all parents are worried for their child to go this far. Don't worry, we are in good hands.
5. You took part in NOMOS EVE 2020 at Istanbul, how did that help you make your dream come true and what do you think about the services provided by Nomos?
As I said before, it's a stressful process because it's not always possible to meet with the coaches face to face. When they don't see you play it's hard for them to recruit you. Athletes who are thinking of coming to the United States to play are lucky to have Nomos EVE. It definitely makes your life easier because you have a chance to speak with coaches face to face. This is a big opportunity. I’m glad to have taken part in Nomos EVE 2020.
